O trabalho de Rui de Oliveira está de alguma forma gravado no seu subconsciente. Não é
possível que você tenha crescido no Brasil sem ter lido algum livro, visto algum cartaz
ou assistido a algum filme, novela ou programa de TV com as suas ilustrações e
programação visual. Rui já é um dos maiores e mais prolíficos ilustradores de nossa
história, presente em momentos preciosos de nossa cultura audiovisual moderna,como
o surgimento da série do Sítio do Picapau Amarelo, na TV Globo, e a implantação
da TV Educativa. O que pouca gente sabe é que, antes da ilustração, tudo começou para
ele com a animação. E esta continua a ser uma paixão para a qual dedica seus momentos
e seus esforços mais caros.
Rui nasceu no Rio de Janeiro, onde estudou pintura no Museu de Arte Moderna
e artes gráficas na Escola de Belas Artes da UFRJ. Mas, desde criança, experimentava
narrativas com o Cinema Barlam, brinquedo popular em sua época, que lhe permitia
realizar projeções de histórias animadas. Esta história foi longe: Rui foi estudar
ilustração em Budapeste, no Instituto Superior Húngaro de Artes Industriais, onde ficou
6 anos. Lá conseguiu estudar e trabalhar também no estúdio Pannónia Film, onde realizou
individualmente dois curtas de animação.
Ao voltar ao Brasil, em 1975, foi contratado pela Rede Globo de Televisão
como diretor de arte, realizando aberturas de novelas e séries. De lá, foi para a
TV Educativa, onde foi também diretor de arte até 1983. Paralelamente, fez aberturas,
cartazes e programação visual para diversos filmes brasileiros. Ilustrou mais de
100 livros e projetou dezenas de capas para as principais editoras brasileiras,
e por este trabalho foi indicado este ano, pela Fundação Nacional do Livro
Infantil e Juvenil, ao Prêmio Hans Christian Andersen de ilustração - o resultado será
divulgado na próxima Feira do Livro de Bologna, em 2006.
Obteve 16 prêmios como ilustrador - no Brasil e no exterior - entre eles,
o prêmio Jabuti de ilustração com o livro A Bela e a Fera e o prêmio
Noma-Unesco-Japão, com o livro Manu, a menina que sabia ouvir, de Michel Ende.
Além disso, Rui de Oliveira tem influenciado e orientado gerações de desenhistas
diretamente na fonte, pois é professor, há 22 anos, do Curso de Desenho Industrial
da UFRJ, e fez mestrado e doutorado em Comunicação e Estética do Audiovisual na USP.

If you live in Brazil, the work of Rui de Oliveira is somehow burned into your
subconscious. It's not possible to have grown up in Brazil without having read a book,
looked at a poster or watched a movie, soap opera or TV program that contained his
illustrations and visual programming. Rui is already one of the greatest and most
prolific illustrators in Brazilian history, having been present during notable moments
of our modern audiovisual culture, such as the appearance of the TV series
"Sítio do Picapau Amarelo" (Yellow Woodpecker Farm) on the television channel, TV Globo,
and the establishment of TV Educativa. What few people know is that, before becoming
an illustrator, he got his start in animation. This continues to be a passion to which
he dedicates much of his time and effort.
Rui was born in Rio de Janeiro, where he studied painting at the Museum of Modern
Art, and graphic art at the School of Fine Arts in UFRJ. But, even when he was he child,
he used to play with stories on his "Cinema Barlam", a popular toy of the time.
This interest took him far: Rui studied illustration in Budapest, at the Hungarian
Institute of Industrial Art, where he remained for 6 years. There, he was able to study
and work in the studio Pannónia Film, where he made two short animation films.
When he returned to Brazil in 1975, he was hired by TV Globo as art director,
developing opening credits for soap operas and TV shows. From there, he moved on to
TV Educativa, where he was also art director until 1983.
Over the same period, he created opening credits, posters and visual programming
for various Brazilian films. He also illustrated more than 100 books and designed
dozens of covers for the largest Brazilian publishers. It was for this work that he
was nominated this year by the National Foundation for Child and Youth Books for the
Hans Christian Andersen Award for illustration - which will be awarded at the next
Bologna Book Fair, in 2006. Ever since 1990, when he returned with renewed energy to
the production of short animation films such as "Cristo Procurado", Rui has been
regularly producing films that stand out because of their visual and narrative quality,
along with his unmistakable style and graphic precision.
Moreover, Rui de Oliveira has influenced and guided generations of designers
directly, as he has been a professor at the Industrial Design Course of UFRJ for
22 years and got his masters and doctorate in Communications and Audiovisual
Aesthetics from USP.
